Moissanite

Is Moissanite a Diamond?

Yes, Moissanite is a man-made Diamond. It has a very similar appearance to diamonds, making it very difficult to tell the two apart. Moissanite stones are lab created, which makes it more affordable than Diamonds and a more appealing option for those looking for eco-friendly gemstones. This, however doesn't mean that the quality diminishes. In fact, Moissanites are almost as hard as Diamonds on the Mohs scale, making them suitable for daily wear and a perfect diamond alternative.

Science Behind Moissanite

Moissanite is a naturally occurring rare mineral silicon carbide, made from a combination of Carbon and Silicon atoms, discovered by French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893. Since this is an extremely rare mineral, our advanced technology has allowed for its lab grown reproduction, making it one of the most ethically sourced stones.
It is often compared to diamonds, and while they are no diamond simulant, they have their own unique characteristics such as their hardness. While diamonds are known to be the hardest material to date, Moissanite’s crystalline structure is assembled in a similar fashion as a Diamond, hence it is extremely resistant to scratching, chipping, and breaking.
Unlike other diamond alternatives and simulants, Moissanite's atomical structure is just as stable as a Diamond's, hence it is impossible for it to change colors and lose its optical value.

Beauty of Moissanite

Moissanite’s beauty as both a jewelry and its characteristics surpasses a Diamond and Cubic Zirconia. Although they are not a diamond simulant, they are better regarded as a diamond alternative. It’s similar crystalline structure makes it scratch-resistant, having a higher refractive index makes it sparkle 10% more so than other stones, and most of all its unique physical properties makes it last forever. This is definitely an excellent choice to grace you.

Confidence in Moissanite

Wear your Moissanite in confidence, knowing that it is made from the highest quality and standards. An ethically sourced, very sparkly, and scratch resistant stone that is guaranteed to last forever is truly the ultimate affordable luxury.
Moissanites stones come in various cuts and can be worn in many different ways. Our diverse earrings, necklaces, and ring styles will allow you to wear your Moissanite in sparkling confidence.

 CZ vs Moissanite

At a glance, Moissanite is often mistaken for a diamond or a diamond simulant, however it is better regarded as a diamond alternative. Diamond simulant such as Cubic Zirconia (CZ) are quite comparable with Moissanite in many aspects. The most notable difference between these two are their appearance, hardness, durability, and refractive index.
Cubic Zirconia is made from Zirconium Dioxide with a hardness rating of 8.25-8.50 on Mohs Scale, a refractive index of 2.171-2.177 and is overall the most affordable stone choice. The hardness scale of the CZ directly relates to its ability to be scratched, hence its durability.
On the other hand, Moissanite is made from Silicon Carbide with a hardness rating of 9.25 on Mohs Scale, a refractive index of 2.65-2.69 and is much more affordable than diamonds but costs more than CZ.
From the data presented above, Moissanite comes out having a higher hardness rating and therefore being more durable for a longer period of time. It also has a higher refractive index, meaning light travels faster through the moissanite and reflects it brighter and shinier. Lastly, although Moissanite is pricier than CZs, it is guaranteed that it can really last for a long time.

4C's of Moissanite

The 4C's, namely Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat are traditionally used in determining the retail value and quality of a diamond, however, the same characteristics are used in grading Moissanites.

CUT

The cut of the stone is important because it determines the radiance of the stone by how well it allows the light to travel through. The shape of the ring is also referred to as it’s cut. There are 5 grades for the cut, namely, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
Here at DoubleAccent, our Moissanite cut is Excellent to ensure maximum sparkles that will enchant the eye when it is shined by the light.

COLOR

The grade of a stone is determined by its color and in Moissanite, the more colorless it is, the higher its value. A grade of D in color is the highest and the value goes down alphabetically, with the lowest and yellowish color diamond is graded Z.
The color of our Moissanite stones are D-grade, which represents colorlessness and the highest grade attainable for color grade.

CLARITY

Clarity grade is how flawless the stone is and how blemish free the stone is. This affects the overall appearance of the stone. It is graded by FL (flawless), which is the highest, to I3 (Included 3) which is the lowest.
Our Moissanite stones have a Clarity grade of VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included), which means that there are slight inclusions that can only be seen on a microscopic level. To the naked eye, our stones will still appear as beautiful and clear.

CARAT

Carat refers to the weight of the stone. A metric carat is 200 milligrams and subdivided by 100 ‘points’ to get the weight accurately. The price of the stone also depends on the carat size, as the carat increases, the rarer and more desirable the stone becomes.
Here at DoubleAccent, we offer our Moissanite stones from 0.5 carat to 1.5 carat

GRA Certified

GRA which stands for Gemological Research Association is an organization dedicated to upholding the standard of excellence in gemstones. GRA’s Standard of Excellence certificate is issued for every Moissanite to determine the Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat for the specific stone. It also serves as a certificate that proves the stone’s authenticity.
A GRA certificate is only issued for 1 ct and up moissanite stone.
